Long & Strong Storm Cycle Kicks in Wed & Thu, Deep Powder Amongst It All

Summary

New Zealand ski fields had a brilliant weekend of powder and clear skies, which will last through to Tuesday. From Wednesday, storms bring strong winds, rain, and mid–high level snow to the South Island. Colder air Friday drops snow to base in the Southern Lakes, while Mt Ruapehu also gets rain then a snow top-up.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Monday 25th & Tuesday 26th August

South Island ski fields enjoy sunny skies and light winds on Monday, with another clear day Tuesday as northwest breezes increase slightly.

Forecast for Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th August

From Wednesday, strong northwesterlies and an incoming front bring cloud, gales, and rain/snow to the Southern Lakes, spreading to Canterbury overnight. Thursday sees severe gales with heavy rain and mid–high snow before conditions ease late in the day, though closures and delays are likely. By Friday, colder westerlies drop snow to base in the Southern Lakes, while Canterbury has mixed skies and easing winds with a chance of light snow on Mt Hutt.

Extended Forecast

Stormy weather continues into early next week, bringing wind, rain, and snow before colder changes deliver fresh powder to New Zealand ski fields.
