Long & Strong Spring Storm Cycle Ahead, Deep Powder Amongst It All

Summary

Stormy weather replaces NZ’s fine spell, with fronts bringing rain, snow, sunshine, and severe gales. Ski fields gain: Treble Cone and Temple Basin 30–50+ cm, others 10–30 cm, and Mt Ruapehu up to half a metre up top.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th August

From Wednesday, strong northwest winds bring cloud and snow to the Southern Lakes, later spreading to Canterbury with rain lower down. On Thursday, severe gales drive heavy rain and dense high-level snow before easing to showers and partial clearing. By Friday, snow showers linger in the Southern Lakes while Canterbury stays mostly fine, with some cloud and snow about the Main Divide.

Forecast for Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st August

Severe northwest gales on Saturday give way to a cold southerly on Sunday, delivering widespread snow and a powder dump before skies gradually clear, with snow returning to the Southern Lakes later.

Extended Forecast

Stormy spring weather with frequent powder dumps will boost NZ ski fields next week, but strong westerly winds are set to cause disruptions.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Friday.
