Sunny Settled Spell After Icy Blast Leaves Fresh Powder

Summary

A southerly blast delivered 10–25cm of fresh snow, with Mt Lyford and Turoa scoring 45–50cm. The South Island now enjoys calm, clear days and frosty nights until Monday, before northwesterlies bring unsettled weather Tuesday. Ruapehu sees sun, cloud, and occasional flurries.

Forecast for Friday 22nd to Tuesday 26th August

The South Island enjoys a run of clear, sunny winter days from Friday through Monday, with frosty starts and light winds. By Tuesday, high cloud and strengthening northwest winds signal a shift away from the settled spell.

Extended Forecast

A storm cycle is expected from mid-next week into early September, bringing shifting snow levels, heavy accumulations, rain, and strong winds, likely giving the season a late boost.
