Season’s Last Week: Sunny Start, Snowy Finish

Summary

Sunday brought calm, clear conditions after a windy stretch. Monday will stay pleasant under high pressure, but from Tuesday, a stalled low will bring gale-force winds, showers, and colder air. Thursday will peak with blizzard conditions and 5–20 cm of snow, easing to lighter, wetter falls by Friday.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Monday 29th & Tuesday 30th September

Monday will be mostly sunny with a northwest breeze and evening showers mainly in Victoria, while Tuesday brings cloudy skies, rain showers, and gale-force northwesterlies.

Forecast for Wednesday 1st to Friday 3rd October

Wednesday brings showers, lowering snow levels to 1500–1600 m and gusty northwest winds, clearing by evening. Thursday will see widespread snow across the Australian Alps with blizzard conditions, gale northwesters, and 5–20 cm of fresh snow easing to light flurries later. Friday features lingering light snow turning wet and sleety at lower slopes, with strong southwesterly winds in exposed areas.

Extended Forecast

This weekend marks the season’s end, with Mt Buller, Falls Creek, and Hotham closing Sunday (5th October) under mostly clear skies and strengthening northwest winds. Monday (6th October) sees Thredbo and Perisher close, with a front bringing rain and winds shifting from strong northwest to lighter southwest.
