Big Storm Cycle Still On Track to Deliver Deepest Powder of the Season

Summary

The storm of the season has begun, starting wet before snow drops to base by Wednesday. Heavy falls continue through Saturday, easing over the weekend as winds ease. Totals of 40–60 cm are expected, with more on upper slopes from blown-in snow. Severe gales and blizzards may disrupt operations, but storm riders are in for a treat.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Wednesday 27th

As colder air moves in from the west, precipitation on mid and upper slopes transitions to snow, with freezing levels falling to around 1400–1600m by evening and dropping further overnight. Fierce northwest winds, at times severe, will drive whiteout blizzard conditions.

Forecast for Thrusday 28th & Friday 29th August

Heavy snow and blizzard conditions persist Thursday and Friday, with snow levels near 1200–1400m and severe northwest gales driving intense snowfall.

Forecast for Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st August

From Saturday to Sunday, heavy snow eases to scattered showers with easing strong southwesterlies, giving some NSW resorts the chance of sunny breaks.

Extended Forecast

Next week, a few snow flurries may appear on Monday (1st of September) before high pressure brings clear weather. This will be followed by strong northwesterlies later in the week ahead of a weekend system.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Friday.
