Big Storm Cycle to Deliver Deepest Powder of the Season

Summary

A calm Monday precedes the season’s biggest storm, lasting Tuesday to Monday. Colder air from Wednesday drops snow to low levels, with 25–50cm expected in Victoria and 40–65cm in NSW. Strong northwesterlies add more to upper slopes but also bring blizzard conditions, so expect disruptions.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th August

Monday brings sunshine and light northwest breezes, before Tuesday turns stormy with gale-force winds and heavy rain spreading across the Australian Alps.

Forecast for Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th August

Rain turns to snow above 1500–1700m on Wednesday as strong northwesterlies hammer exposed areas. Thursday brings a classic powder day, with snow dropping to 1000–1200m, becoming heavier through the day amid gale-force winds and blizzard conditions. On Friday, heavy snow continues with more blustery west–northwest gales, locking in another powder day.

Extended Forecast

Snow showers and strong winds will persist over the weekend, adding fresh powder before clearing Monday (1st September) as high pressure brings a brief calm, though strong northwesterlies are expected later in the week.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Wednesday.
