Snow for the Rockies on Thursday & Friday
Summary
Lift-served ski season is winding down, but the weather pattern will stay active over the next week with late-season powder opportunities for ski resorts that are still open. A storm will bring snow to the Northern & Central Rockies on Thu-Fri, with Montana & Wyoming favored for the deepest totals. Another storm will reach the Sierra early next week. New England also has colder temps & snow ahead.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Thu (Apr 16) to Fri (Apr 17):
A strong storm produced heavy snowfall across the Northwest and Western Canada earlier this week. This storm will move into the Northern & Central U.S. Rockies on Thursday-Friday, bringing colder air and snow to Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado.

Here is a closer look at projected snowfall on Thursday-Friday from our PEAKS Model. Utah and Colorado will see mainly light to moderate snowfall with some isolated higher totals.
Further north, Big Sky and Grand Targhee will be favored for the deepest snow totals of ski resorts that are still open (note: Big Sky is closed mid-week but reopens this weekend).

Forecast for Sat (Apr 18) to Sun (Apr 19):
Spring skiing conditions will return to the West as a ridge of high pressure builds, leading to increased sunshine and warmer temperatures. Sunday currently looks to have the best melt/freeze cycle for prime corn snow in the Rockies.
Meanwhile, a sharp cool-down is coming to the Upper Midwest and the East following a very warm week. Light snow is expected to fall across the Upper Midwest, Northern New England, and Quebec.

Forecast for Mon (Apr 20) to Tue (Apr 21):
A trough of low pressure will reach the West Coast early next week, with significant snowfall possible across the Sierra as colder air arrives, while the Cascades will likely see lighter snowfall. Most ski resorts in the Sierra will be closed for the season after this weekend, but Palisades Tahoe and Mammoth will still be open.
In the Northeast, lingering moisture and chilly temps will keep snow shower chances going across Northern New England and Quebec. A handful of ski resorts will still be open in this region as well.

Extended Forecast
Outlook for Wed (Apr 22) to Sun (Apr 26):
A trough will slowly work its way across the Interior West during this period, with below-average temperatures favored across most of the West.
Periods of mid to high elevation snow can also be expected across the West, though the timing and distribution are uncertain this far out. For now, the Central Rockies (CO, UT) and the Canadian Rockies appear to be most favored for snowfall.
In the East, warmer temperatures will return to the Upper Midwest and Mid-Atlantic, while a colder airmass looks to hang on across New England. However, a drier pattern is also expected, so meaningful snowfall potential in New England appears to be limited.

Thanks so much for reading!
The final post of the season, which will include a winter 2025-2026 recap, will be published on Wednesday, April 22nd.
