Stormy Finish to the NZ Ski Season

Summary

A run of fronts has brought a mix of powder, wind, and rain. Treble Cone and Coronet Peak enjoyed brief good conditions over the weekend, while Mt Hutt was closed Sunday. More snow arrives early this week, followed by a warmer, wetter front Thursday. Friday looks good before a Tasman Storm. Cardrona closes October 5, with The Remarkables and Mt Hutt following October 12.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Monday 29th to Wednesday 1st October

Snow lingers in the Southern Lakes on Monday before clearing, while Mt Hutt sees a late dusting and Mt Ruapehu battles gales and rain. Tuesday turns wild with severe northwesterlies and fresh snow for the Southern Lakes, moving into Canterbury by night. By Wednesday, the Lakes enjoy a sunny powder day, while Mt Hutt and Ruapehu see lingering flurries and showers.

Forecast for Thursday 2nd & Friday 3rd October

Thursday brings brief rain to South Island fields with clearing skies, while Mt Ruapehu endures heavier, more prolonged rain and gale westerlies. Friday starts fine nationwide before clouds, northerlies, and evening rain arrive, with snow possible up high in the Southern Lakes.

Extended Forecast

The Tasman storm peaks Saturday (4th October) with rough conditions on Mt Ruapehu, while the South Island fares slightly better before a cold southerly brings light snow Sunday (5th October). Early next week, stormy westerlies return, delivering more wind, snow, and rain with only short sunny breaks.
