September Totals Continue to Climb with More Shots of Powder Ahead

Summary

Southern Lakes picked up 5–25 cm of new snow Monday, adding to hefty September totals. Powdery conditions continue at higher elevations as fronts roll through. Canterbury sees fresh falls between sunny breaks, though winds and high snow levels may complicate conditions. Ruapehu faces a mix of rain, snow, and strong northwest winds.

Short Term Forecast

Wednesday 24th & Thursday 25th September

On Wednesday, a front moves across New Zealand, bringing 10–30 cm of snow to the Southern Lakes, especially Treble Cone, while Canterbury clears for sunshine and Mt Ruapehu sees rain and snow. On Thursday, clear skies over the Southern Lakes offer prime powder, Canterbury gets a fresh 5–10 cm of snow, and Mt Ruapehu experiences mixed precipitation with strong westerly winds.

Friday 26th September

On Friday, a front brings 10–30 cm of snow to the Southern Lakes and Canterbury, with heavier totals at Treble Cone, while strong northwest winds and lingering snow flurries affect the Southern Lakes and Ruapehu, where lower slopes see wet snow and lift operations may be impacted.

Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th September

A series of fronts will bring snow and rain to the South Island this weekend, with snow levels rising quickly on Saturday and strong northwesterly winds, particularly in Canterbury, potentially disrupting lift operations. On Sunday, another round of snow and rain hits the South Island while Mt Ruapehu continues to see strong westerlies and rain showers.

Extended Forecast

A cold southerly will bring a last burst of snow to the South Island on Monday (29th September) before easing over the North Island on Tuesday (30th September), followed by a brief high-pressure break and storms returning later in the week.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Friday.
