Storm Cycle Resumes Thursday, Snow Continues Ticking Up

Summary

NZ is in a stormy spring, with strong winds disrupting ski fields and shifting snowpack. Fronts have delivered 10–20 cm in the Southern Lakes and 5 cm in Canterbury. A brief ridge brings calm today (Wed) before a Thu–Fri front brings gales, rain, and snow, easing to cold winds and snow showers this weekend. Solid falls are expected in the Southern Lakes, with lighter totals elsewhere.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th September

Wednesday brings a fine day under high pressure, though cloud builds later as northwest winds strengthen. By Thursday and Friday, strong to severe northwest gales deliver rain and snow, heaviest near the Main Divide, with Treble Cone seeing modest accumulations while eastern fields like Mt Hutt miss out.

Forecast for Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th September

On Saturday, snow showers clear the Southern Lakes early before moving into Canterbury, easing late under cold southwest winds. Sunday brings just a few flurries in both regions, otherwise mostly sunny with easing southwesterlies.

Extended Forecast

High pressure brings calmer weather on Monday, September 8th, before a strong front on the 9th–11th delivers cold southerlies and variable snow totals. After a brief lull, stormy conditions are expected to return by week’s end.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Friday.
