Next Storm to Deliver Deep Powder Sunday to Wednesday

Summary

High pressure keeps NZ fine today before moving east this weekend. Strengthening northwesterlies and an approaching front bring heavy snow: Southern Lakes Sunday, Canterbury Monday, Ruapehu Tuesday. A colder southerly follows, extending snow in the South Island until Tuesday and Ruapehu until Wednesday.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Friday 15th & Saturday 16th August

Friday will be sunny across ski fields as early cloud clears and southwest winds ease before turning northwest over the South Island. Saturday starts fine but turns cloudy with strengthening northwest winds, and afternoon snow showers likely for Treble Cone and Temple Basin.

Forecast for Sunday 17th to Wednesday 20th August

Sunday brings rain and snow to the Southern Lakes, lowering to base levels by evening, while Canterbury sees lighter snow near the Main Divide as northwest winds ease. Snow moves up Canterbury on Monday with a cold southerly, returning to the Southern Lakes later, before gradually clearing the South Island and Mt Ruapehu by Wednesday as high pressure builds.

Extended Forecast

High pressure will bring sunny, settled weather and fresh powder through Friday (22nd Aug), before a possible storm late weekend or early next week.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Monday.
