Next Storm Cycle Kicks Off This Weekend

Summary

Southern Lakes had some of the season’s best after last week’s top-up. Canterbury and Ruapehu saw flurries, while Lyford added 6+cm to its earlier 35–40cm. Mostly fine ahead, with Ruapehu flurries midweek before a Sunday front brings heavy rain, snow, and gales.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Wednesday 13th to Friday 15th August

South Island ski fields will see sunny days with light breezes midweek, though Thursday afternoon will bring cloud to the Southern Lakes as winds pick up. By Friday, skies will clear again for another sunny day, with winds easing and turning northwest.

Forecast for Saturday 16th & Sunday the 17th August

South Island ski fields will begin Saturday under clear skies, but strengthening northwest winds and increasing cloud will bring snow to higher slopes and rain lower down in the Southern Lakes by night. On Sunday, a passing front will deliver heavy morning snow up high and rain below, before clearing skies and easing winds move in during the afternoon.

Extended Forecast

An icy southerly on Monday and Tuesday, 18–19 August, will bring quality low-level snow through Wednesday, 20 August, before high pressure delivers a few clear days, with the next storm likely Sunday, 24 August, or early the following week.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Friday.
