Leftover Snowfall in Canterbury before Settled Conditions Spread North

Summary

Clear skies followed Friday’s icy southerlies, bringing fresh powder to low levels. Southern Lakes got 5–17 cm, Canterbury 20–25 cm, and Mt Lyford led with 35–40 cm. Mt Ruapehu saw 10–30 cm. A high-pressure ridge will bring sun to Southern Lakes all week, Canterbury clearing by Wednesday and Ruapehu by Friday, with snow guns running.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Monday 11th & Tuesday 12th of August

Southern Lakes will see sunny skies on both Monday and Tuesday as cold southeasterlies ease. Canterbury will be cloudier with light snow north of Mt Hutt, easing late Tuesday.

Forecast for Wednesday 13th to Friday 15th of August

Wednesday will be sunny across the South Island with light winds and a frosty start. Thursday stays sunny, though cloud moves into the Southern Lakes in the afternoon as winds pick up. Friday will also be sunny, with a northwest breeze in the Southern Lakes and light southwesterlies in Canterbury changing to Northwest.

Extended Forecast

A potentially strong storm could bring fresh powder and cold temps to NZ ski fields from 17–20 August, offering a much-needed boost to the slow season.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Wednesday.
