Cold Change to Bring Fresh Powder to Low Levels

Summary

Strong winds shut Canterbury fields Thursday as a front brought rain and snow down south. A cold southerly hits Friday, with powder for the Southern Lakes, top-ups in Canterbury, and snow to low levels on Ruapehu. Icy winds ease Tuesday, with good ski conditions to follow.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Friday 8th and Saturday 9th August

Friday brings a cold southwest change up the South Island, delivering 5cm of snow to the Queenstown side in the morning and 10–20cm in Canterbury later in the day. On Saturday, icy southerlies linger with morning flurries in Queenstown and around 5cm of new snow in Canterbury north of Mt Hutt by afternoon.

Forecast for Sunday 10th to Tuesday 12th August

From Sunday to Tuesday, freezing southeasterlies ease, clearing skies over the Southern Lakes and gradually reducing snow showers in Canterbury, especially north of Mt Hutt. High pressure builds by Tuesday, bringing sunny conditions south, while cloud and light snow linger in northern Canterbury.

Extended Forecast

Cold conditions persist next week as high pressure moves north, with potential snow for the Southern Lakes late Thursday (14th Aug) and another front bringing widespread low-level snow next weekend.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Monday.
